A window mylar bag is a standard foil laminate pouch with a section of clear film in place of the opaque foil in a specific area. The window is created during manufacture by laminating a transparent PET or OPP film panel into the foil bag structure at the desired location.

The rest of the bag (back, sides, top, bottom) retains the full foil barrier. Only the window area foregoes the foil layer. This means barrier performance is maintained everywhere except the window, which is a reasonable trade-off for most products.

The window itself is typically positioned on the front panel of the bag to maximise visibility during retail display. Common positions:

- Full-length centre window (a vertical strip down the middle of the front panel)

- Lower front panel window (showing the bottom half of the product contents)

- Oval or shaped window (a design-led approach rather than a straight-cut window)

- Back panel window (allows product to be seen from the back of shelf; less common)

Barrier Considerations

The window panel area of a window bag has lower barrier performance than the foil sections. The clear film used in the window is typically a PET or OPP film without a foil layer, which has a higher oxygen and moisture transmission rate than the foil areas.

For most products with shelf lives of three to six months, this is not a practical concern: the foil sections around the window still maintain excellent overall barrier performance, and the window area represents a relatively small proportion of the total bag surface.

For products with extremely sensitive barrier requirements (freeze-dried products, certain pharmaceutical materials), discuss window bag suitability with your supplier before specifying this format.
